THE WAY OF THE CROSS AT THE SHRINE OF THE HOLY INNOCENTS FUNDS

By Elena V. Gianan

I love to fish, on a boat or on the bridge or on any bank of water. I used to live in Gulf Harbour Subdivision in New Port Richey, Florida, USA for 13 years and worked in one of the hospitals by Tarpon Srping and New Port Richey General Hospital and in some outpatient clinics.

Taking my boat out into the canal in front of my house out into the Gulf of Mexico, I enjoyed it. There is nothing like it, plus catching fresh fish. I learned two ways of fishing: fishing with a pole and hook and fishing with net. I learned also two ways of cleaning fish: the Filipino way by removing the gills, stomach and scales, and then the American way of staking and filleting. I can smoke a fish and inihaw or fried fish, etc.

Having a boat is expensive because you have to get a boat mechanic to check if the boat is safe before taking it out. This one time I decided not to take my boat and just fish on the bridge of Gulf Harbour where I live. Out I go walking from my house to the bridge. It was about early afternoon, 5 P.M. It was a beautiful evening, almost sunset and the moon coming up.

I was sitting on the bridge with all the fishing gear, bucket and fishing net. Every time I threw out the net, I offered it and said a prayer for the doctor whom I worked with, who was and is very difficult to work with, or a supervisor difficult to love and please. I said to our Lord Jesus, with whom I have a dialogue all the time, Lord Jesus help me to love all and He always answered me. I answered Him with a big yes. After five minutes, I have to bring up the net and no fish. I said thank you Lord; fish or no fish I am still thanking God.

I’m grateful to God the Father that after an hour of throwing the net, He had a beautiful way of giving me a big grouper (lapu-lapu). You cannot catch a grouper by just throwing the net on the bridge; you have to take the boat out into the open sea of Gulf of Mexico thirty miles away from the shore and thirty feet underwater. There was this man with his red truck zooming to a stop by the foot of the bridge, the man walking towards me and asking, “Mom, would you like to have a grouper?” I said, of course, I love it. This miracle happens half-an-hour after praying to God the Father.

I walk with the man down to the foot of the bridge and I ask him what his name was and he said Michael. I said, Michael you’re not just a man, an angel, especially angel Saint Michael. Michael is also my nephew’s name. He asked me, “Are you a Christian?” I said, of course, adding that I actually don’t eat all the fish I catch, I share it with some window, single mother, or orphan at work. He did not give me one fish but two groupers. I was so happy not because of the fish but because I discovered the awesome love of God for me. I’m a sinner and I discovered the love of God. God loves us first, even though we are sinners. I was jumping with joy, exclaiming God loves me, a sinner.

Walking down the bridge to my house, I saw my next-door neighbor, a lady who happened to be a Filipina whom I didn’t know before. I said, would you like to have a fish, and she answered, no, she would like to have my camote tops. To love is contiguous, just like gossiping.

We are all to start doing good or loving each other. Love one another as much as He loves you. We are all committed to Jesus a hundred and one percent, not just 50%, 25% or 10%. I’m inviting and encouraging you in this Divine Adventure to join me in sponsoring and helping the young seminarians to finish priesthood and to become a godmother to a priest-to-be in their ordination. And also some little girls to become religious nuns. I know that the Lord will answer your desire and prayers a hundred fold and a thousand fold because only in giving will you receive more bounty. Without the priest and religious, there will be no Mass. What will happen to the Church, to us people? We will all be lost.

These children at the Immaculate Concepcion Seminary Academy started so young and able to understand that when the priest will tell them to go to bed, then they go to bed. When the priest tell them it’s time to get up, then they get up without complaints. At their early age they are being trained to become our future priests, not just priests but good and holy priests. I know Bishop Manolo delos Santos produces good and holy priests.

Don’t forget that the next Station of the Cross at the Shrine of the Holy Innocents Funds is on August 8, 2014. Go to the early Mass at 5:30 A.M. at the Cathedral and proceed to the Shrine and we will have coffee. Enjoy!
