A son of Bato who has spent years with the National Power Corporation as one of its key officers has been chosen as the state power firm’s new president and chief executive officer.
Born and raised in barangay Sibacungan, Pio J. Benavidez took his oath as NPC head honcho before Department of Energy (DoE) Secretary Alfonso Cusi last April 6. He is happily married to Ambassador Virginia Honrado Benavidez, with whom he has three children: Diogenes Alexander, Jofren and Rubianca Angelica Benavidez.
An old hand at Napocor, having retired in 2015 as Senior Vice President and in charge of the Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) that operates 247 power plants in so-called Missionary Areas like Catanduanes, Benavidez said that one of his thrusts is to have 24/7 stable and reliable power supply in the SPUG areas.
After his stint as a long-time executive at NPC, he ventured into the private sector but was recently appointed by Malacanang as a member of the state-run company’s board of directors. In last week’s election, Benavidez was chosen as president and CEO.
His knowledge of the issues and problems of the power company, as well as his familiarity with the energy sector, is expected to serve him well in his new post considering that he already has an existing working relationship with the staff and management, observers noted.
