CSU celebrates 2018 founding and charter anniversary, reaps various institutional awards

The Catanduanes State University (CSU) celebrates this October its month-long foundation and charter anniversary with the theme, “Bridging Times, Sustaining Excellence, Transforming Lives.” 

It is in its 47th year now since it was founded as a college in 1971 through RA 6341 of the late Congressman Jose M. Alberto, and in its 6th year as a university through RA 10299 of Congressman Cesar V. Sarmiento who authored the law that was signed by then Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III on October 19, 2012.

Dr. Minerva I. Morales, CSU President, approved several activities in commemorating the event:  October 8 marked the kick-off activities with a Mass, Parade around Virac poblacion with Berdeng Karosa float competition, poster presentation and launching of souvenir shop and gift items. 

Held on October 15 was the raising of the Philippine and CSU flags at the CSU front grounds, with Pres.  Morales, Virac Mayor Samuel V. Laynes, Governor Joseph C. Cua, and Cong. Sarmiento delivering messages. The CSU Hablon Dawani’s opening performance was followed by a field demonstration of the Laboratory Schools, after which the “I LOVE CSU” marker was unveiled.

After the symbolic photo-op of CSU community and the unveiling of markers at the new buildings in the main campus - the CBA, CICT, Engineering, CIT, Gymnasium, Auditorium, and Entrepreneur Buildings – the ground breaking of the new CAS Building-2 was conducted.

On Oct. 15, the university played host to the three-day, 5th Philippine National Biodiversity Meeting (BIOME5) and 3rd National Conference on Science Education Technology (SEDTEC3) at CSU Auditorium and the Amenia Beach Resort in Palawig, San Andres, where research authorities from other parts of Asia and the Philippines were resource persons.

Should time permit, Dr. Morales likewise said that the launching of the second edition of  the universit’sy coffee table book, “Tough to Top,” would be included in any of the lined-up activities during the month. The book essays the triumphs of the second batch of board topnotchers from CSU from various municipalities of the province.

Oct. 18 was a whole-day teambuilding activity or Family Day of all officials and personnel of the university at Mamangal Beach Resort in Virac. The following day, the CSU marching band went around the campus in the morning; while in the afternoon, the school held its Gawad Parangal for Outstanding Alumni and the awards rites for Benefactors, Service Awardees in the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Categories, and the Retirees at the university auditorium.

This year’s outstanding alumni include: Mrs. Rowena B. Bautista, Mr. Antonio A. Jimenez Jr., Mr. Uldarico S. Razal Jr., Mr. Marvin Jay R. Sarmiento, Mr. Ricky T. Sosa, and Ms. Estrella V. Tulay.   Scheduled on Oct. 23 is a Jobs Fair at the auditorium spearheaded by the university Alumni Relations Office while in last week of October, an Open House and “Green Pa More” competition among main campus offices and colleges will be held.

Best Engineering School, winning team nationwide

Crowning this year’s anniversary are some notable achievements of the university as it draws close to the last quarter. In the recently released ranking of the best civil engineering schools in the Philippines for 2017, the CSU’s College of Engineering under its Dean, Engr. Pedro Arcilla Jr., was rated as one of the 2017 Best Civil Engineering Schools in the Philippines.

Released last September 29, 2018 by Uguide@ COLLEGETIPSH, results showed that the CSU College of Engineering got the 18th rank with overall score of 64.83% out of 269 engineering schools nationwide.  UGuide features only 32 of the 269 colleges and universities offering undergraduate programs in civil engineering. The College’s program is presently Level II accredited.

The rankings were based on the weighted passing rates of the two licensure examinations in November and April, the number of examinees, the top performing examinees as the overall board exam performance, level of accreditation, faculty-student ratio to find out which schools offering undergraduate programs in civil engineering have the most valuable degree programs to produce batch of examinees with high licensure examination passing rate.

On the other hand, the CSU-College of Engineering Team was in the Top 5 among the 126 competing teams from state colleges and universities nationwide during the National Civil Engineering Summit Quiz 2018.

Participating engineering students during the said event were: Julius John T. Dayawon, Dexter Tayam, Shan ArnielTabios, and Aldrin Balmadrid, with their instructor-coach, Engr. Michael M. Traballo.

IT skills olympics

In another victory, the students from the College of Information and Communication Technology (CICT) claimed its share of honors just as well.

Ralph Edwin W. Panti, a first-year student taking up Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), bagged second place in the Computer Networking category, beating other contenders from state universities and colleges all over the country in the 8th IT Skills Olympics 2018 at the University of Makati, on September 28, 2018 with the theme, “Ramifications in the Digital Age: Challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

Shining together with Panti were the rest of the CSU-CICT team which competing students who also earned wins in the following categories: C# Programming, Java Programming, Web Design, IT Quiz Bee, and PC Assembly/Disassembly. They are: Kent Emman P. de Leon, Cesar M. Ramirez Jr., Arejay O. Tabirara, Cyril B. Tabor, Kevin D. Kozma, Ma. Katrina M. Sarausa, Erickson Salazar, Andrea Morales, and Mark Jay I. Tablizo. They were joined by their coaches, Daryl O. Pulvinar, John Gregory M. Bola, Paula Bianca D. Bagayan, and Joy V. Santelices.

JPIA as most awarded chapter

Under the auspices of the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA), the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA)-CSU Chapter, got the Most Awarded Local Chapter honors during the 19th Regional Midyear Convention held September 21-23, 2018.

Other awards given to JPIA-Catanduanes were: Most Punctual Local Chapter, Excellence in Non-Academics (2nd Runner-Up), Excellence in Academics (Champion), and Largest Number of Delegates.

The CSU student-JPIA members likewise distinguished themselves in the contests: Mark Anthony Manzano (5th place, Management Advisory Services and Cost Cutting; 1st place, Advanced Financial Accounting and Reporting); Berthil Rose Valeza (3rd place, Financial Accounting and Reporting); Marko Rey Tapel (1st place, Regulatory Framework for Business Transactions); Wennie Rose Valdez (1st place, Auditing Theory and Auditing Problems); and, Clarice del Rosario (Special Cup).

Research wins

Upholding the research culture and tradition of the university, its select faculty research earned awards in the 5th Regional Fisheries Research, Development and Extension Symposium held at Ragay National Agricultural and Fisheries School (RNAFS) at Ragay, Camarines Sur on Oct. 2 – 3, 2018.

Ryan Paul C. Brillante, author /presenter and Dr. Jimmy T. Masagca, co-author, won 2nd place for their paper, entitled, “Fish and Plankton Population in Cabugao Bay, Catanduanes, Luzon”.

Placing 3rd was the research paper entitled, “Utilizing Tuna By-Product Meal as Food Supplement to Broiler”, presented/authored by Dr. Myrna A. Santelices, Dr. Ruben P. Tablizo, and Jan Bernard M. Victorio.

Prior to that, Dr. Minerva I. Morales, CSU President; Dr. Lily P. Custodio, Vice-President, REPA, Dr. AURORA E. ARAOJO, Professor VI/ Faculty, CAS, and Dr. Jimmy T. Masagca, Director, Research and Development Services, won 3rd place in the WIlliam C. Medrano Best RDE Management Paper Award. Their paper, entitled, “Gains from a Research and Development Management Model for a Green University, was presented during the 3rd International Research, Development and Extension Management Congress and 28th National PHILARM National Research, Development and Extension (RDE) Management Congress and the 28th National PHILARM Convention of the Philippine Association of Research Managers Inc. held at Crown Regency Residences, Cebu City On July 31, to August 3, 2018.
