A GUIDE FOR YOUNG VOTERS. The editorial staff of CNHS’ “Ang Kampilan”, accompanied by school paper adviser Jupiter Torno (2nd from left) and Provincial Elections Supervisor Atty. Ma. Aurea Bo-Bunao (extreme left), turns over the voter’s guide to DepEd SDS Socorro dela Rosa (5th from left). The guide will be included in a high school subject and discussed in youth fora.

A student-made brochure aimed at guiding voters in the 2019 national and local elections will soon be incorporated in the social studies subject of public high schools following its turnover to the Department of Education (DepEd).

According to Provincial Elections Supervisor Atty. Ma. Aurea Bo-Bunao, the brochure entitled “Gabay sa Pagboto ng mga Kabataang Botante ng Virac” has been pilot-tested at the Catanduanes National High School (CNHS) where it took shape through consultations with students.

Conceptualized by DepEd, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) and the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the module is Atty. Bo-Bunao’s reentry project at the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) where she took up Master of Public Management.

“The module seeks to empower the youth to decide what they need among leaders,” the provincial elections officer said, adding that the editorial staff of CNHS’s “Ang Kampilan” school paper spearheaded the drafting and design of the brochure, with guidance from COMELEC.

Aside from explaining COMELEC’s role in supervising elections and in voter registration, the brochure also discussed different ways by which the right to suffrage is exercised, the role of the people in a democracy as well as their rights and responsibilities as voters, and the qualifications of candidates.

Focusing on good governance, transparency and accountability, the voters’ guide specifically identifies a good leader’s traits: #One Call Away – one who is always ready to resolve problems; #Mr. Clean – with clean intention for the country and its people; #Advance Mag-Isip – already has plans even before he sits in office; #Confidently Helpful With A Heart – very helpful especially towards the poor; #May Isang Salita – does what he says; #Good Listener – knows how to listen to constituents; #Lokal – will promote local tourism; #Nature Lover – will give emphasis on local agriculture; and, #Going Back To The Future – will not forget his roots but knows how to look into the future.

Atty. Bo-Bunao told the Tribune that DepEd Schools Division Superintendent Socorro dela Rosa has vowed to incorporate the brochure’s vital discussions in the Araling Panlipunan subjects while PPCRV will use the guide in its various youth fora. The brochure will also be distributed among local radio stations for airing.
