A quarrel between two brothers in Viga town on New Year’s Day deteriorated into violence, with one of them declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

The report reaching the office of Catanduanes police provincial director Senior Superintendent Jonathan Panganiban identified the victim as Rito Megenio Barcita Jr., 38, a farmer from barangay Botinagan.

The Viga police station learned of the incident from barangay officer-in-charge Kagawad Jade Padilla and SK chairman Francis de Jesus and three tanods who had found the victim lying unconscious alongside the highway at 2 P.M. of Jan. 1, 2019.

A team led by Senior Inspector Dexter Panganiban, chief of police, and SPO1 George Grebialde proceeded to the district hospital where they found out that the victim was declared dead on arrival at the facility by Dr. Alexander Richard Pariñas.

Investigators disclosed that at around 1:40 P.M. that day, Rito and his younger brother, Rio, 25, an abaca stripper, were engaged in a drinking spree together with Rose Tonio at the store of their parents when a heated argument ensued.

Their sister, Ria Mae Barcita, 18, tried to pacify her brothers but Rito punched her in the head that rendered her unconscious, prompting Rio to swing a piece of wood at the head of his elder brother. Rito fell unconscious and never woke up.

Appropriate charges are being prepared for filing against the suspect through inquest proceedings.
