9 illegal fishers nabbed within marine reserve

Elements of the Virac police station arrested nine persons who were caught fishing inside the marine reserve in barangay Magnesia del Sur last week.

The team led by SPO3 Salvador Avila collared Jesus Malenab, 39, and Andres Santos, 40, both of the coastal village; Celso Rallos Jr., 28, Ryan Vargas, 29, and Rogelio Talan, 48, all of Cabihian; and, Joselito Interior, 44, Ignacio Velarde,38, Argen Celestino, 46, and Kenneth Rima, 28, all of Marambong, Pandan, while inside the marine sanctuary and in possession of four small spears, a spear gun, two bolos, eight flashlights, their catch of small seashells and fish, three small baskets and three fishing rods.

A case for violation of Sec/ 101 of Republic Act 10654 has been filed against them before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.

In another development, five persons, including four minors, gathering crab fry in the swamp in Sta. Ana, Panganiban were apprehended by the police last week.

Ramil Torio, 21, a fisherman from Sta. Ana, were with the four minors aged 16-17 and residents of Ogbong, when they were caught in the act of using fine mesh nets to catch “kuto-kuto” crab fry at 5:30 P.M. of Jan. 28, 2019.

Operatives of the Panganiban police led by Senior Inspector Emsol Icawat brought them to the police station, with the minors referred to the Women and Children’s Protection Desk for appropriate action.
