The Virac Fire Station is apparently keeping a tight lid on the details of last week’s fire that razed some eight residential homes in Palnab del Norte.

A fireman at the station refused the Tribune’s request for a copy of the spot report on the incident, claiming that the fire marshal prohibits the release of any information on such matters to the public, including the media.

He claimed that only the Court can order them to release the information to any person or entity.

At the time of the Tribune query, the municipal fire marshal, Fire Inspector Dennis Tadoy, was not available for comment.

Pursuant to Executive Order 2-2016 or the Freedom of Information (FOI) Program of the Philippines, issued by Pres. Rodrigo Duterte, Filipinos shall have access to government information, official records, public records, and to documents and papers pertaining to official acts, transactions or decisions, as well as to government research data used as basis for policy development -- as long as it is not covered by the exceptions to the FOI.

Records of law enforcement agencies, particularly involving public safety, are not covered by the exceptions identified and issued by the Office of the Executive Secretary on Nov. 24, 2016.
