7 illegal fishers caught in Baras

The Catanduanes police’s campaign against illegal fishing progressed last week, with seven fishermen arrested in a seaborne operation in Baras town.

Joint elements of Baras municipal police station led by Pat. Mark Vincent Obo and the Provincial Special Operation Team (PSOT) led by Cpl. Antonio Abines III were conducting monitoring at the municipal waters off barangay Genitligan at 2 A.M. of April 14, 2019 when they spotted the suspects in the act of engaging in illegal fishing activity.

Those arrested were Marlon Tugano, 33, Rodel Villasana, 33, and Randy Santos, 40, all residents of Panay in Panganiban town, and, Rommel Borjal, 38, Ricky Tanael, 37, Erwin Villasana, 37, and Ryan Borjal, 30, all residents of Genitligan, Baras. 

Confiscated during the operation were a compressor tank, a compressor engine, a 12HP motorized banca engine with defaced engine number, a bundle of compressor hose with a length of 50 meters, nine (9) flippers, two (2) paddles, four (4) spear guns, an anchor, four (4) flashlights, 25 kilos of assorted fish and the banca itself.

A case for violation of Sec. 86 (a) of Republic Act 1654 is now being prepared by the police for filing against the suspects.
