A resident of Virac was recently sentenced to imprisonment of up to 16 years after he was found guilty of illegal possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

The Regional Trial Court meted Joebert Gianan Sorrera imprisonment of 12 years and one day as minimum to 14 years as maximum for the drug possession charge, as well as a fine of P300,000, and added another six months and one day as minimum to two years as maximum for the drug paraphernalia complaint plus a fine of P10,000.

RTC Branch 43 Presiding Judge Lelu P. Contreras ordered the 0.092 gram of methamphetamine hydrochloride and various drug paraphernalia confiscated to be disposed of by the government.

Information filed before the Court stated that a police team led by Chief Insp. Joven Fernandez served a search warrant on Sorrera at his house in San Pedro at 9:05 P.M. of June 7, 2016 in the presence of designated witnesses.

The search uncovered a white envelope containing a big plastic sachet of shabu and three small sachets of the drug, as well two tooters, four lighters, a flame adjuster, four small sachets containing white residue and pieces of aluminum foil.

During the trial, Sorrera alleged that the evidence against him were planted at the time the searching team took a break and he went outside the house to verify who could have opened the window in his room. Later, however, he admitted taking a crumpled aluminum tooter and hiding it in his waistline, before it was found by the searchers.

He also tried to tarnish the operation against him by claiming that PO1 Vincent Tacorda wanted to get back at him for refusing to become his drug asset.

The Court, however, maintained that Sorrera failed to show any convincing evidence to warrant a finding that the police officers had not performed their official duties in the manner prescribed by law.

It also noted that the prosecution evidence established four links in the chain of custody of the confiscated items.
