Three accused of murder plead guilty to homicide

By pleading guilty to the lower offense of homicide, three men separately accused of murder escaped being sentenced to life imprisonment.

At the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 42, Presiding Judge Genie G. Gapas-Agbada sentenced Lucio Zapanta to eight to 14 years, eight months and one day in jail, and to pay the family of the victim the sum of P30,000.00 as actual damages.

Zapanta allegedly attacked and hacked Imelda Barro at 6:30 A.M. of Aug. 12, 2018 at San Andres, Pandan, causing multiple injuries that led to her death.

The second man, Ruben Lucero, pleaded guilty to the same offense and was meted six to 12 years in jail and to pay the family of the victim P50,000 as civil liability.

At 9:30 P.M. of Sept. 28, 2017 in Catagbacan, San Andres, Mariel Nucup was busy with her cellphone when the accused, coming from behind, stabbed her with a knife, causing her untimely demise.

On the other hand, Aaron de Mesa, did the same and got a prison term of 1o years and one day as minimum to 14 years, eight months and one day as maximum.

Judge Gapas-Agbada also ordered him to pay the heirs of the victim, Salvador Teodones, the sum of P50,000 as actual damages.

The prosecution had accused de Mesa of using a rock to hit Teodones and pound his head on the concrete floor of the latter’s house in the morning of May 22, 2016 at Salvacion St., Libod Poblacion, in Bato town, resulting to his death, with the crime committed with the abuse of superior strength.
