A passenger van transporting Vote Counting Machines fell on its side along the national road in Codon when the soft embankment collapsed.

The Catanduanes police reported that at 6:45 A.M. of May 14, 2019, the driver of a “VIRSACAPAN” white van, Anselmo Burac Jr., 32, of Tubli, Caramoran, stopped on the road side to urinate but he did not notice that soil on which the right side wheels were resting was soft due a hole beside the ditch.

The vehicle, as well as the 21 VCMs and 19 batteries it was carrying, fell on its side, slightly injuring its two passengers: VCM municipal coordinator Nerissa de Quiroz and her daughter, Air 21 staffer Elynique Ann Naanod, both of Tubli. They were brought to the Juan M. Alberto Memorial District Hospital for treatment.

A day earlier, two motorcycles collided along a curved portion of the highway in barangay Lictin, also in San Andres.

According to the town police, Ninja Van delivery man Mark Dominick Solero, 21, of Esperanza, San Andrs, was driving his Honda RS motorcycle towards Virac when it was hit by a Suzuki Smash motorcycle driven by Cedric Santelices, 21, with backrider Joven Zuniega, both construction workers from Timbaan. Initial investigation showed the Suzuki encroached on the lane occupied by the Honda.

The victims sustained injuries and were brought to the district hospital before being transferred to the Eastern Bicol Medical Center in Virac.

Meanwhile, the sister of a man who drowned at a resort in Virac last May 15, 2019 has claimed no one at the resort came to his rescue.

Susan Bozar, 57, a resident of Mabato, San Miguel, told the police that at around 5 P.M. that day she received a cellphone call from her neighbor, Liezel Ogena, that her brother, Alfredo Balisacan, had drowned inside Emmanuel’s Paradise Resort at sitio Mamangal, Virac.

Witness John Cesar Ogena said that despite their plea for help, nobody from the resort personnel came to assist in rescuing the victim.
