Farmer nabbed for hauling hot lumber

Joint elements of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) last week arrested a 44-year old farmer from Virac in an operation against illegal logging.

CIDG Catanduanes provincial field unit led by Maj. Elvis Angay-Angay and personnel from PENRO Virac apprehended Ronnie Sarmiento of Sogod-Tibgao while transporting 54 pieces of illegally-sawn lumber using a carabao sled last June 12, 2019 at about 5 P.M.

The law enforcers confiscated the mahogany lumber with a total volume of 216 board feet as well as three carabao sleds (patuloy) and the carabao itself. The suspect remains in custody of the CIDT while the evidence is with PENRO.

Meanwhile, joint elements of the Catanduanes 1st and 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company, CIDG and the Virac police tracker team led by Maj. Jerome Regachuelo arrested a wanted person in Calabnigan last June 14 at 11:35 P.M.

Andres Pantino, 59, was nabbed on the basis of a warrant of arrest issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 42 Presiding Judge Lelu P. Contreras in connection with four counts of violation of Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004, with recommended bail of P72,000 each.

In Bagamanoc, trial for a similar charge awaits a laborer who was arrested last June 13 by joint elements of the local police, the Panganiban MPS, and Catanduanes 2nd Police Mobile Force Company led by Staff Sergeant Marlon Matienzo at barangay Antipolo.

Alvin Bolima, 26, a resident of San Nicolas, Panganiban, has a standing warrant of arrest issued by RTC Branch 42 Presiding Judge Genie G. Gapas-Agbada, for violation of Sec. 5(a) of R.A 9262 with bail bond of P6,000.00.
