A member of the Sangguniang Bayan of Virac has proposed twin ordinances that would grant a P10,000 burial assistance for indigent residents and a P200 monthly allowance for People with Disability (PWDs) as part of the social amelioration program of the capital town.

According to the proposed measure of Councilor Alipio Abundo and Councilor Sonny Francisco, there is a need to update an existing ordinance giving a minimum amount as burial assistance for indigent residents so that their loved one could be provided decent funeral services.

The maximum burial assistance to be given by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) would be pegged at P10,000 to include the provision of an ordinary white casket, transport, embalming, funeral wake for seven days and interment.

The Abundo-Francisco measure defines indigent families as those families of individual persons living on their own who earn a combined monthly income of less than P5,000 and who do not own properties worth more than P10,000 as certified by the punong barangay.

The P10,000 assistance would come in the form of a discount for funeral services at accredited funeral homes, who would be reimbursed the amount by the MSWDO upon approval of the head of office.

On the other hand, Councilor Abundo has also filed an ordinance that, if approved, would provide a P200 monthly allowance to PWDs so that can enjoy a comprehensive health care and financial assistance to foster their capacity to attain a more meaningful and productive lifestyle.

Both draft ordinances did not indicate where the expenditures would be charged in the General Fund.
